Regency Costume Links
Here are some websites with information to help you make your own Regency outfit.
| Research Sites | ||
| The Regency Garderobe | Fashion overview, fabric tips, pattern list and reviews, bibliography, Q&A page, information on corsets, glossary of regency costume terms, very helpful construction tips for specific patterns, photographs of the author's garments, information on her book on Regency costume | |
|
The Regency Fashion Page |
Incredible page with links for men's, women's, and children's costumes and many subpages on specific items such as outerwear, hats, and shoes. Includes numerous period illustraions and paintings as well as photographs of actual garments.
| La Belle Assemblee | Subpage of the above, with direct links to the fashion plates from many issues from 1808 to 1818. | |
|
The Republic of Pemberley |
Notes and numerous period illustrations of women's costume, including period fashion illustrations and caricatures and some photos of original corsets.
|
Jessamyn's Regency Costume Companion |
Well-organized page with notes and period illustrations divided by type of garment, including men's, women's, and children's. Also photos of original pieces from museums, pattern and book reviews, links.
| A Regency Repository: Fashion | Collection of links to other research sites, pattersn, etc. | |
| Tidens Toj | Online gallery includes gowns and menswear from 1790-1840, including a bizarre knitted Regency dress. Use the "Naeste" arrow in the upper right corner to scroll through the outfits. | |
| Museum of Costume at Bath | Online gallery includes an 1804 evening gown and an early 1810's full-length silk pelisse. | |
| Katherine' Dress Site | Fashion plates and descriptions from 1806, patterns from actual garments, garment photos. | |
| Court Gowns: Dressing the Part | Article describing the ludicrous hooped-but-high-waisted gowns required to be worn at Court during the early 19th century. With fashion plates of both English and the much more sensible (hoopless) French court dress of the era. | |
Patterns & Construction Tips
| Past Patterns: 1789-1829 Patterns | Excellent early 19th century day dress pattern and a Napoleonic Wars British infantry jacket. | |
| Kannik's Korner | Patterns for women's shift, caps, bonnets, stockings; men's shirt, accessories. The patterns are very accurate, but the shirt & shift patterns are full of period details and hand-sewing and quite challenging to make. Warning: the page has a rooster sound effect. | |
| Folkwear Pattern #215: Empire Gown | Ballgown pattern (leave off the train). | |
| La Mode Bagatelle | The "Regency Wardrobe" pattern, a multi-item pattern for sewing day and evening wear. | |
| Neck Tying | Photo-illustrated guide to tying a simple Regency-era cravat. | |
| Regency Neckcloths | Photos and instructions of several cravat styles. Use with caution - at the very least, the cravats in the pictures don't look starched. | |
| How to Tie a Turban | Photo-illustrated guide to tying a turban using two scarves. The page is aimed at belly dancers and shows scarves with tassels at both ends (Regency ones seem to have had only one end or none tasselled) but the method works well. | |
